The Stalker: woah, man

Artist Michael Brophy turned me onto this movie a few months ago when I met him at an art thing. I told him I wrote a blog about manly movies and he said I should watch this thing. Now, a movie called "the stalker" and you're probably thinking "creep" but you're only half right. This is a Russian story about a man who can take people into this "zone" that has been inhabited by aliens and only he can do it because he's a stalker. This is one of those movies where you need to turn down the lights, turn up the music and experience this thing. Wizard of Oz x Psychedelia.

Awesome.

What manliness can you learn from this movie? Use the skill you have to help those you can, haters keep on hating.

LIMITLESS: ADVERTISMENT FOR SPEED

MAN MOVIE MONTH DOES NOT CONDONE USE OF ILLICIT DRUGS.

So this pretty unproductive guy who just got dumped by his girlfriend was walking down the street and runs into this other dude who has drugs. HOW MANY TIMES HAVE WE SEEN THAT IN A MOVIE? Sure, whatever, MMM is not about how many times people have jumped away from an explosion or narrowly survived a serious flesh wound, it's about manly movies. I guess this counts as one because the protagonist takes this stuff and then changes his life. One trait manliness is the ability to adapt and change. So, without this drug he was totally unproductive, with the drug he cleaned his apartment, wrote his book, and then got a new suit and haircut.

Sure, there was a little bit of belief suspension, but what movie doesn't have that. Hard to believe/easy to believe the underlying "big brother" story and it helps that it shows that deugs can really mess people up. Also, one of the best uses of an underage surprise weapon I'd ever seen in film.

What can we learn from this movie?

Never too late to change. Get a haircut and get the real jobs.

BLADE RUNNER (THE FINAL CUT): FUTURE OF YOUR PERSONAL COMPUTER

While my wife (www.brittanypowell.com) is out of town at an artist residency (www.calderaarts.org), I'm watching a manly movie every night.

Blade Runner takes place in a rainy Los Angeles in 2019. That's only 7 3/4 years away. Replicants and humans, humans and replicants, who is who, more human than human. 

This movie has it all: fights, weird guns, cool flying cars, dystopian future, god complexes, admiral adama, unicorns, genetic engineering, building size tv-advertisments, good looking computer romances and detectivey mystery. Every time I see this movie I want to watch it over again, it's just that good. The soundtrack/score by Valis is splendid. I want to see more.

Things to learn

1. You may not be a unique unicorn, but don't stop doing what you're programmed to do.

Your significant other will like this movie and you will too. It is good.

1. Sunglasses: great disguise

2. Don't say mean things, just dont say it.

which seems really weird, even though this is a 50s period piece that has some late 80s flair.

This was Kyle "Little Wings" Field playing at the, now defunct, Artistery, Saturday was its very last show. It was in the basement, hot and muggy.

Elliot Gould plays Marlowe, a chain smoking Californian private investigator who lives next door to some perennially topless hippie candle dippers. I've never before seen a character smoke as much as he does. Wow. Keep that up and you'll end up in an Ecto-1 style ambulance

 

COLD WEATHER: NOMINATED FOR THE BEST NEW MANLY MOVIE 2011

Cold Weather was filmed where I live. There's even a shot that's about a block and a half from my house. Wow. My house is not famous.

The movie is about this guy who gave up going to college, transplanted to portland (obv.), has to get a menial job and learns all sorts of interesting things while meeting new friends, living with his sister, and having a run in with his ex girlfriend and some other dudes. Sherlock Holmes + older Michael Cera = this guy

SPOILER ALERT: NEVER, NOT ONCE does he say that his job is "cool" I was so let down by this I almost walked out of the theater after the final credits started.

So, taking photos in a movie theater is a no-no so here's the poster.

Go see this movie. Go pay to see this movie. Don't download it.
